Based on the distribution channel, the market is segmented into offline and online. Almost all categories grew by double-digit percentages, mainly due to a lackluster performance in Q2 2020, when the entire country was under lockdown. Canalys attributed the overall increase in demand for PCs to the quick economic recovery in India led by startups and large enterprises. In November last year, the Indian PC market which includes desktops, workstations and notebooks reported an all-time high shipment record of 4.5 million units, despite global chip shortage. Dell was followed by Samsung and Acer, with market shares of 9.8% and 8%, respectively. Global PC shipments totaled 76.6 million units in the first quarter of 2014, a 1.7 percent decline from the first quarter of 2013. The APAC PC market declined 5.2% in the second quarter of 2022, driven by a 16% decline in the China PC market. China’s zero COVID-19 policy dramatically impacted the economy with lockdowns in Shanghai stopping carriers and logistics and any online orders and delivery in Shanghai during the time. Small and medium businesses also increased their procurement of notebooks with relatively moderate growth of 12.1% y-o-y in the quarter under review, it added. Online buying played an important role in this quarter, and as a result, vendors shipped almost one-third of their PCs to online channels, IDC said.

Companies are focusing on developing high-performing and convenient-to-use devices owing to the increasing consumer demand. For instance, in September 2020, Samsung released its new smart tablet Galaxy Tab Active3. It is equipped with an enhanced Touch Sensitivity feature that enables the user to operate the tab easily with fingers, even while wearing hand gloves. Demand for desktops is also picking up with workers returning to workplaces– a total of 0.6 million desktops were shipped at a growth rate of 29%. Notebooks contributed to 61 per cent of the overall India personal computer market with 45.2 per cent year-on-year growth bolstered by demand across both the consumer and commercial segments. India’s PC shipments notched a healthy 28.1 per cent growth in April-June 2018 with 2.25 million units, buoyed by strong notebook demand, research firm IDC India said today.

Though HP maintained its lead in the desktop and notebook market, in the overall PC market that included tablets, they are the second leading brand (24% market share) with 1.2 million PC shipments, out of which 1 million were notebooks. Dell with a 13.7% market share and 726,000 unit shipments was the third leading brand during the quarter. In terms of total PC market share including tablets, Lenovo has surpassed HP to become the leading PC vendor (27% market share) for the first time since the October- December quarter of 2020. The Chinese brand shipped 1.4 million devices in the September quarter, out of which 600,000 were tablets. Transsion Holdings reported Q results with revenues up 16% YoY and net profit up 33% YoY. These positive results were driven once again by further pivoting to smartphone sales, especially in the core African market.

Spillover orders from the previous quarter boosted the government segment, but other segments are weakening, and channel inventory is rising. While notebooks remained the volume leader with 2.6 million units, their growth rate slowed to 7.3% YoY from nearly 30% YoY in the past three quarters. According to Canalys, Acer’s notebook shipments have almost doubled annually, while its desktop business grew by almost 100%. Analysts have attributed this growth to the ramping of local manufacturing of desktops by Acer to meet specific government criteria for a contract order, which requires vendors to ensure that over 50% of its devices are manufactured in India.

HP continued to lead the overall PC market even as India registered a 17.8 percent year-over-year growth by shipping 3.7 million PCs in the second quarter of 2022 , as per a new report by IDC. The market research firm says that the growth was led by the strong government segment due to spillover orders from the previous quarter. The traditional PC market in India is inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations.

DataWind led the market with its share at 34.2 per cent share, followed by Samsung , Pantel (BSNL’s partner) , Micromax .
