The University of South Dakota’s Sanford School of Medicine opened in 1907 and is still the only medical school in the state. The school boasts a small community feel, maintaining a 3-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Students begin working in clinical environments during their first year. USF’s pre-med graduates go on to top medical and veterinary schools and other professional medical degree programs.

The applicant should have a minimum of 64 semester credits of college course work for admissions committee consideration, with a minimum of 90 semester credits of college course work before matriculation. Unlike its medical school, the university’s law school is looking into the possibility of moving to Sioux Falls due to low enrollment.
