Boarding Schools bestow on students an independence they would not have when living at home. Our well-established Center of Excellence programs in hockey, soccer, golf, and figure skating combine elite-level training, development, and competition with the demanding academics of a college-prep school. Our goal is to develop great athletes who are also superb students and citizens of integrity.
Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, located in Faribault, Minnesota, is a co-ed private boarding school with affiliations to the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. It currently serves students in grades 6 through 12. Mary’s School is a co-educational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 6 through 12 and post-graduate students. 2003 marked the beginning of a period of growth and development for the School. Additionally, the School developed the unique Center of Excellence model that Shattuck-St.
Established in 1858, this school is one of the oldest co-educational private schools in the southern region of Minnesota, and is well known for their outstanding athletics department. Sports teams include Hockey, Soccer, Lacrosse, Tennis, Fencing, Baseball, Golf, and Basketball. All teams are represented by the same mascot, the Sabre.
From a production perspective, this project was beyond extraordinary. Joseph Machlitt was an arts and photography teacher at Shattuck-St. Machlitt sexually abused a student at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in 1980 and, in November 2012, was charged with 1 count of criminal sexual conduct and 2 counts of attempted criminal sexual university of illinois graduation rate conduct for his actions. Lynn Seibel was arrested in California in August 2012 and charged with 14 felony counts of criminal sexual misconduct for the alleged sexual abuse of six male students at Shattuck-St. Mary’s from 1992 to 2003 and became head of the boy’s dormitory and chair of the drama department.
About this time, the newly established Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota selected Henry Benjamin Whipple as its first bishop. In 1860, Whipple took over the reins of the school, changing Breck’s ambitious plan for “Bishop Seabury University” into “an honest school.” In 1864, the school moved to its present site on the bluffs above the Straight River. With this change, the institution became a boarding school for young men and boys. In 1865, Tommy Crump, an English divinity student recently returned from the Civil War, started training the boys in military foot drill, with the boys using sticks as stand-ins for rifles. This began a military program that lasted for more than a century; during this time the campus was known as the Shattuck Military Academy.
Mary’s Girls Soccer Center of Excellence member Julia Roddar ’10 and Team Sweden earned the silver medal after a hard fought battle with Team Canada in the gold medal women’s soccer game at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Both schools saw rapid growth during the next few years. In 1901, Dr. Dobbin founded St. James School for younger boys about a half mile north of Shattuck. In 1932, Seabury Theological Seminary merged with Western Theological Seminary and moved to Evanston, Illinois. Bud Wilkinson, 3-time consecutive national champion in football at University of Minnesota; Hall Of Fame college football coach, University of Oklahoma; Class of 1933.
When a client brief reads “We don’t have a campus yet, we don’t have students yet, and we currently only have a handful of faculty”,The Film Guys answer the call. When other schools were huddled up by their fireplaces, the Shattuck-Saint Mary’s Forest City team was trying to cope with the tropical conditions of Southern Malaysia as we hauled desks onto the beach. All these memories, all these legendary players and the staff and coaches truly ask for one thing in return from their students. The confidence in the program amongst hockey directors, coaches, players and staff is unmatched. The game has changed, the players have changed and how it’s coached has changed, but for Ward there are many things that will stand the test of time.
Several former students became successful NHL players, including Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise, and Jonathan Toews. Other notable alumni include actor Marlon Brando and sportscaster Brent Musberger. In 2012, Minnesota was rocked by a revelation that the prestigious boarding school and hockey powerhouse, Shattuck – St. Mary’s, in Faribault, Minnesota, had a secret and tragic history of sexual coercion and sexual abuse. SSM’s unique approach emphasizes the fundamentals of skill development and execution, body conditioning, and tactics for physical and mental development. Our program includes a rigorous full-year schedule, with competition throughout the United States and Canada for all teams. Student-athletes are on the ice, the field, and the course six to seven days a week, and each participates in a year-round strength and conditioning program.
There are currently nine Centers of Excellence spanning across academics, athletics, and the arts. This, combined with the School’s innovative blended learning model and ScholarShift program, has made Shattuck-St. Mary’s the prominent academic institution it is today.
Students also receive training through Minnesota Opera’s Project Opera program and the Hennepin Theater Trust’s Spotlight Program. In 2013, SSM embarked on a three-year partnership with Beijing Bayi School which culminated in the creation of a satellite campus known as SSM-Bayi in Beijing, China. The program offered classes preparing students for the Chinese Huikao examinations as well as a traditional American curriculum featuring Advanced Placement courses and preparation for SAT tests. SSM-Bayi students also had the opportunity to attend summer sessions at the main SSM campus in Faribault. The first contract between the two school lasted until July 2014. Although the partnership on this project has ended, SSM will continue to maintain a globally focused curriculum at the main campus and pursue the creation of further campuses around the world.
