The Bible is a profound and beautiful work. It contains the words of life, wisdom, and hope that we all need to thrive in this world. But it also contains words of truth about who God is, and what he expects from us. We cannot fully understand or appreciate these truths without understanding who God is as well. So today we want to look at one verse where Jesus talks about his Father: As He is, so are we (1 John 4:17). This sentiment is found in John’s first letter. He writes: “Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment; because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear… Let us not love with word or with tongue, but with actions and in truth” (vv 17-18). In other words, if God loves unconditionally then we should strive to do the same. And since his Father gives life freely through Christ’s death and resurrection, our goal should be to offer it back.
