Arizona Iced Tea is a refreshing drink that is sure to please. It has been around for over 100 years and continues to be a hit with iced tea drinkers everywhere. This post will explore the history of this delicious beverage, as well as provide some tips on how you can make it at home.
The story goes that in 1918 an enterprising merchant named Roy Allen was on his way to a convention in Phoenix and stopped at the home of Dr. Charles Ringer in nearby Tempe for lunch. As the weather was very hot, Mrs. Ringer served him iced tea which he drank with great appreciation and then asked if she could make it available when he opened his first restaurant.
When this became possible, Allen’s wife suggested adding lemon juice to sweeten it more because ginger ale had not yet been invented as an alternative beverage. It is unclear how or why they called their drink “Arizona” but one can only assume that its connection with America’s 48th state made.
